American Dreaming
Belonging × Shock Absorption
20 countries — where social fabric meets fiscal resilience
Methodology & Sources

Belonging Index (x-axis): Composite of Ownership (WID wealth/income distribution, World Bank Gini), Agency (ILO union density, CB coverage, labour share), and Community Resilience (WVS trust, IDEA voter turnout). v0.1 — 9 indicators, equal-weighted within dimensions. US ranks 17th of 20.

Shock Absorption (y-axis): Fiscal headroom measured by debt-to-GDP (IMF/WB, inverted), current account balance (WB), reserve currency status (tiered), and central bank independence (Garriga CBI proxy). Equal-weighted, 0-100 scale.

Quadrants: Median split. Upper-right = resilient (high belonging + high fiscal headroom). Lower-left = structurally fragile (low belonging + low fiscal headroom). Upper-left = stable but hollow (fiscal capacity without social fabric). Lower-right = fragile stability (social fabric without fiscal capacity).
